13 In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.
“So then, faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” – Rom 10:17. We hear the word of truth (gospel) as revealed by God, then in faith place our trust in Jesus. An amazing transaction takes place. We become “bond servants,” literally willing slaves, and brothers of Christ. We become His.
God seals the deal with His own Spirit, indwelling the believer, providing His guarantee. This sealing is the same language as in the sealing of a letter with a wax seal, signifying who is in full ownership of that which is contained in the document.
There are four key truths signified by this sealing of the believer:
- Authenticity – As in 1 Kings 21:6, the King authenticates the transaction by his specific seal. We have God’s seal, forever His and recognized by all.
- Authority – As in Ester 8:8, the King acts in His authority. God is “authorized” by His own authority to make you His forever.
- Security – As in Daniel 6 and Mathew 27, we are secured by our Lord. It’s as if a heavy stone is securing us from the rest of the world. The Holy Spirit secures us supernaturally from the evil one and his minions.
- Ownership – The seal indicates ownership. Signing a document and applying your seal indicates your ownership, both in ancient times and today.
God has done something amazing. When we become true believers, He seals us with His Holy Spirit, the gift of an earnest payment indicating His ownership. The Holy Spirit renews and sanctifies us in preparation for eternity with our Lord. All in the supernatural world recognize this seal. We are willingly His and under His provision and protection for ever. He will never let us go.
